COPE - Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (Not for profit organization)
COPE is a magnificent not for profit organization helping the victims of Laos. It was only established in 2008. It collects donations from all over the world and uses those donations to manufacture and provide Prosthetics and Rehabilitation for needy victims. Global Support Association Inc also has a a facility to collect funds for remittance to COPE in its donations form. There is no administration fee or commissions through us and all donations go directly to COPE once received.
A visit to COPE centre in Vientiane Laos, is a must for any visitor. It not only opens your eyes to the wonderful work that is happening but also to the history and atrocities that occurred in Laos by the USA - through no fault of the Laotian people. No one knows how many people were killed. A lot of the area bombed was populated with ethnic agricultural villages who did not have access to any communication and didn't know what was happening. A visit also helps you realize the wonderful nature of the Laos people where there is no ill will, no anger or no animosity which is probably the reason why very little has been done to help Laos or to share with the world the atrocities committed. It is common when you ask a Lao what they think of the bombing during the Vietnam war they usually say - we don't want to talk about it as it makes us feel sad. While the obvious solution is to clear Laos of un-exploded bombs, this is really an impossible task for an individual association. There are after all around 80 million still remaining un-detonated. Bomb disposal experts predict that this cannot occur in any of their lifetimes. Global Support Association has to be content to at least help the victims and help them to be true survivors. Clearing the mines has to be a major effort by nations. |
